Activating Ruskin Square, 2014 – 2018

In 2014 White Label was engaged by Stanhope Schroders to bring the new walkway from East Croydon station to life in a meanwhile use project to invigorate what would become the Ruskin Square development.

With a brief to create community engagement and provides opportunities for new businesses, the aim was to generate social and economic benefits for both property owners and residents.

The space was named ‘Platform, Ruskin Square’ and White Label designed its branding, built a website to promote activity in the space, and ran the marketing campaigns for the events we organised in the space.

Following the launch of the bridge exit to Caithness Walk, early activations at Platform included a giant screen for Wimbledon Live, the procurement of a regular coffee vendor, pop-up world food lunchtime markets, Putt Putt – an exhibition of artwork that took the form of a crazy golf course and a series of busking style performances.

Annual activity thereafter included the continuation of weekly markets, with more than 100 local workers heading to Platform for lunch each Thursday, and numerous themed activations from St George’s Day and Chinese New Year to Hallowe’en and a BMX bike stunts installation. Highlights of the programme included:

  • Platform’s Christmas Cheers bar in 2014 – a three-week pop-up Christmas chalet bar run in partnership with local businesses alongside a florist and Christmas market traders.
  • Croydon on the Beach 2015 – the first real sand beach installation in Croydon that also hosted the launch event for BOXPARK Croydon and elements of the Croydon Ambition Festival. The beach was sponsored by the Saint Lucia tourism board.
  • Platform Goes Polar 2015 – weekly festive installations including live reindeer, giant interactive penguins and an enormous snowglobe you could have your photo taken inside.

In addition to running the activity, creating a destination and building footfall at Ruskin Square, we worked on commercialising the space to help cover activation costs and build confidence in Ruskin Square as a retail location.
