What we were asked to do
As part of our work for Stanhope Schroders to encourage meanwhile use of a new broadwalk from East Croydon station through what will become the Ruskin Square development, we set ourselves the task of installing an urban beach at Platform. It was to become the summer highlight of a programme of innovative, exciting and creative events and installations at the site, next to the new exit from East Croydon station.
How we did it
For a six week period during the summer 2015, Platform was transformed into a summer hotspot, thanks to 45 tonnes of sand, sponsored by Sibelco, and the construction efforts of a local building company. The launch of Croydon on the Beach was timed to coincide with Croydon's Ambition Festival and Platform's beach hosted one of the Ambition stages with live performances throughout the 4-Day Festival.
To support Croydon on the Beach, we extended the Thursday street food markets to run from 11am – 9pm on both Thursdays and Fridays and added a cocktail bar. We are alsoo arranged extra creative events on site for #FunDayFridays which included Punch and Judy shows, Giant Games days and a photo booth pod which lunchtime customers could use to have their picture taken at the beach free of charge.
The event as a whole was supported by Saint Lucia Tourist Board who ran a competition to win a seven night holiday to Saint Lucia.
